Crowdfunding Campaign Aims to Provide 50 Women and Children with Shelter in Armenia

Women’s Support Center Launches Crowdfunding Campaign

Yerevan-based Women’s Support Center (WSC) NGO recently launched a $25,000 crowdfunding campaign to provide 50 women and children victims of domestic violence with shelter support in Armenia.

The situation in Armenia is grave, as there is no law criminalizing domestic violence and no safeguards to protect victims and their children. Just last week another women was murdered by her husband, bringing the death toll to 36 in the last six years and leaving over 50 children motherless.

The WSC and its partner organizations have worked diligently to break taboos surrounding domestic violence in Armenia. As a result, more and more women are calling the hotline number and seeking shelter support. Because its existing shelter is at full capacity throughout much of the year, the WSC decided to open a second shelter this year. Given the absence of State funding for shelter support, this is a service that the WSC covers in order to ensure the protection and safety of victims and their children.

The women and children who stay at the WSC shelter are able to stay safe, regain their well-being, and overcome trauma as they access a number of services, including case management, socio-psychological counseling, a variety of educational programs, full walk-in services, a 24-hour hotline, an economic empowerment program that encourages survivors to jumpstart their careers, and legal counseling and defense services. For women staying at the WSC shelter, these services give them the opportunity to reintegrate into society and go on to live abuse-free lives.
