Several issues were discussed during the meeting, including Azerbaijan’s escalation of violence on the border, as well as U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) and Ranking Democrat Eliot Engel’s (D-N.Y.) call for renewed U.S. leadership in keeping the peace along the Nagorno-Karabagh (Artsakh) Line of Contact.

The safety and future of the Syrian Armenian community, Armenia’s proposed constitutional reforms, U.S.-Armenia economic ties, and the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide were also discussed.

Sarkisian was joined by Armenian Foreign Affairs Minister Edward Nalbandian, Armenia’s Ambassador to the U.S. Tigran Sargsyan, as well as other high-ranking members of the presidential delegation.

On Sept. 29, Sarkisian addressed the 70th Session of the United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly at the U.N. headquarters in New York. During his address, the president took the opportunity to thank various world leaders and governments for their efforts to commemorate the Armenian Genocide during the Centennial. He also highlighted the aggressive policy of Baku, and the killing of three Armenian civilian women by Azerbaijani forces in September.
