Double Solitude

Giotto’s O

The old story goes that the Pope, wishing to employ artists from all over Italy, sent a messenger to collect specimens of their work. When the man visited Giotto (c. 1267-1337), the artist paused for a moment from the picture he was working on and with his brush drew a perfect circle on a piece of paper. In some surprise, the man returned to the Pope, who, appreciating the perfection of Giotto’s artistry and skill by his unerring circle, employed Giotto forthwith.

‘The 25th Hour’

A movie made in 1967 starring Anthony Quinn and Virna Lisi based upon true events that occurred in World War II Romania. Produced by Carlo Ponti (Sophia Loren’s husband) and directed by Henri Verneuil (Ashod Malakian), and featuring Gregoire Aslan (“Coco” Aslan in his early films) and Marcel Dalio (croupier in “Casablanca”), with brief appearances by Michael Redgrave and Alexander Knox, it is one of the best and least shown of Quinn’s movies, and worth searching out and viewing (more than once).

C.K. Garabed (a.k.a. Charles Kasbarian) has been active in the Armenian Church and Armenian community organizations all his life. He produces a weekly column called “Uncle Garabed's Notebook,” in which he presents an assortment of tales, anecdotes, poems, riddles, and trivia; for the past 10 years, each column has contained a deconstruction of an Armenian surname. He believes his greatest accomplishment in life, and his contribution to the Armenian nation, has been the espousing of Aghavni, and the begetting of Antranig and Lucine.
