Providence ‘Varantian’ Ball

WEST WARWICK, R.I.—The AYF Providence “Varantian” Chapter held their annual “Varantian” Ball on Jan. 29. The V-Ball was originally created as a barahantes and evolved into a dinner/dance about 20 years ago.

There were around 350 people in attendance on Jan. 29, including AYF Seniors and Juniors from the host chapter and across the East Coast; AYF alumni; as well as friends and family. Dinner was served at 6 p.m. and the dance began at 9, with entertainment provided by the Harry Bedrossian Ensemble.

The event was emceed by senior chapter member and junior advisor Simon Sarkisian. Featured speakers were Talene Taraksian (president, senior chapter), Lena Minassian (former president, junior chapter), and Stephen Elmasian (ARF advisor to the senior chapter). In addition, Der Gomidas Baghsarian of the Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church of Providence offered a blessing and some words of encouragement, and Harout Khatchadourian was welcomed into the alumni ranks by alumni Margaret Stepanian and Antranig Mesrobian.

With its history of nearly 60 years, the “Varantian” Ball is a great example of the spirit of tradition that is prevalent in the AYF-YOARF, as present-day members continue to carry on such events established by the previous generations.
