Pogosyan Exhibit Opens at NYC Art Bazaar

Pogosyan uses nearly every medium—oil, watercolor, pastel, papier-mâché—while also possessing a unique style of his own. Jonathan Greenberg, the vice president of Fine Arts at the Sotheby’s in New York, describes Pogosyan’s style as “deeply personal: he has for many years explored a particular repertoire of themes, which reappear continuously in his work, regardless of what medium he may have selected, or of what scale. Some of these themes are religious and deeply felt, some by contrast are hedonistic; but they are all suffused with the singular humanity, which reflects the personality of their creator.”

Pogosyan’s works showcase one very important feature in his art—they are all deeply inspired by his love of theater, which is suggested by his titles: “Actors,” “IndianMasks.” One of the most beloved works at the exhibit, the “Mask,” is a colorful papier-mâché head of a bull.

Born in Gyumri, Armenia, Pogosyan’s fascination with the genre of painting began very early, and he often won awards as a teenager. After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Gyumri, Pogosyan moved to Yerevan, where he attended and graduated from the Terlemezian Art College and the Academy of Fine Arts with Honors of Excellence.

By this time, he was already actively participating in exhibitions both in Armenia as well as in Russia and abroad. Pogosyan became the decorator and stage designer for Armenian National Television, as well as a professor at his own alma mater, the Academy of Fine Arts in Yerevan. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including in Bulgaria, Germany and the U.S.

Since 1998, Pogosyan has resided in the United States. One of his exhibits in the U.S. was at the ArtExpo 2000, in San Francisco. In December 2001, he received a nomination for the “Valley Theatre League, 8th Annual Artistic Director Achievement” Award for his set design of the comedy “Uncle Balthazar,” produced by the Armenian Theater Company.
