Southern Florida Celebrates ARS Centennial

On Sat., May 15, Armenian Americans living in southern Florida gathered in the Armenian Center’s beautifully decorated hall to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Relief Society (ARS), with the participation of the local ARF and Homenetmen chapters.

On behalf of the ARS “Sosseh” Florida Chapter, chairwoman Mary Andonian gave the opening remarks, welcoming the more than 150 guests and talking about the achievements and activities of the chapter. Andonian then introduced the day’s guest speaker, Angele Manoogian, chairwoman of the Centennial Regional Committee.

Manoogian welcomed the guests and congratulated the “Sosseh” Chapter on its work. She spoke about the significance of this anniversary, which is being celebrated throughout the world, and explained the national and international mission of the ARS, which includes helping Armenian youth in their pursuit of higher education. She also commended the organization’s efforts in aiding Armenia’s earthquake survivors by establishing medical stations, childcare centers, orphanages, and other essential services.

Following dinner, which was prepared by members of the “Sosseh” Chapter, popular singer Manuel Menengitchian took the stage, followed by another famous performer, Steve Iskenderian, who entertained the crowd late into the night.

A candle lighting ceremony for the 100th anniversary of the ARS also took place during the event, with the participation of the majority of the crowd.

It was a memorable evening for the Florida Armenians.
