Dear Editor,
The article “Jack Papazian Remembered as Philly Catalyst,” (The Armenian Weekly, May 30, 2009) written by Tom Vartabedian was incredible. Tom has written many “people” articles, all of them very well written with fact and feelings. However, writing about Jack was Tom at his best. An outstanding tribute.
The article portrayed the essence of Jack—mild-mannered, soft-spoken, unpretentious, a leader, and a dedicated Armenian.
He created the AYF Olympic spirit in Philly, was chairman of the Olympic Committee in 1995, chosen King in 1982, and lived to see his son, David, also honored as Olympic King in 2002.
I would like to add that Jack was an outstanding tennis player, loved the game, and played in tournaments. He took his racquet when he traveled (i.e., the Poconos, Hilton Head, Florida or AYF Olympics).
When Jack and his beautiful wife, Armine, became close friends with my wife and I, we always looked forward to the next meeting with them. I loved Jack Papazian for what he was and what he stood for.
I thank Tom Vartabedian for his wonderful, informative tribute to our beloved friend, Jack Papazian.
