  1. I have a question for our friends from Turkey, especially those who are n Armenian, Greek and Assyrian.

Even though the Republican period followed on the heels of the worst portions of the Genocide of Christians in Turkey, and even though the Republic’s leaders plundered our wealth and often killed Christians, it also seems that here and there Armenians held high positions, such as University professors like the man in the article. My impression is that this is an impossibility today, even though we are told that Erdogan has made it possible to publish books about the Genocide. Do we still have Christian professors?

Is it true that professional life today for Armenians in Turkey is worse than it was in 1950 or 1960?

    • My impression is that Kemal, having ensured by force Turkish supremacy in what was left of his country, no longer feared minorities, and in fact sought to profit from their presence. It was not Kemal that imposed the scandalously unjust 1942 property tax (varlîk), nor was it he who organized the September 1955 pogroms against the Greek community of Istanbul or the massive expulsions of 1964!

  2. Erdogan is one of the worst dictator that rules Turkey. He claims that Turkey is a democracy. Erdogan wouldn’t know democracy even if he fell into it. He has alienated Turkey from the rest of the world, by his undemocratic ideals. He only believes in dictatorship and personal power. He has made all minorities living in Turkey his enemy, and has encouraged everyone to treat minorities as 3rd class citizens. I would like to put him in line with the Old Sultans of the past.

  3. Thank you, lets act like Brothers as once we used to than, and forget the blood fued, for our kids to ive in peace

    • If what you say is true .how comes Turkey in last 20 years have better economy, better national health service.more control over the army( who kept over taking the parliament. Prosperity. (meaning there is no shortage of food ,medicen, fuel, ect….trading with Turkish lira..unlike before Dollar..producing ..war planes..guns..tanks all Turkish made..l could go on and on…so don’t be afraid..from Erdogan..you are just a puppet in Europe. You only believe what your press show you .just wake up an see the reality..Erdogan is looking after over 3 million refugees. With Turkish Economy ..more than all European countries put together..that’s some dictator..prejudice will get you and people like you to no where….

  4. As long as self serving western powers like the U.S. , the U.K. and others turn a blind eye on basic human rights issues and continue in their pursuit of political and economic gains, I’m afraid “turkey ” will continue on it’s path to more and more repression and the persecution of
    minorities shall prevail.

    • The reality is simply that the foreign policy of every nation in the world, including Russia and Armenia,is self serving. It is a necessity for survival.

  5. As a reader, both as human and as Armenian, I am quite proud of Hagop Martayan and his great linguistic creation…however, would not like much to exploit the matter against Turkey but the fact is a fact and acceptance from the Turkish part should also be a fact…although I am sure they may not be much pleased announcing such realities since Martayan did what was positive and disregarded the announcement of the fact although it was for the Turks’ benefit and was never a “cultural genocide” vis-a-vis the turkish response in 1915….

  6. I made two short comments in this the other day. None was published. My comments had to do with the fact that Hagop Martayan was a collaborator and we fail to examine this side of History.
    Thank you.

  7. I would post and answer some here , however anything I post always gets blocked , it’s as though Armenians are afraid to debate and be questioned! Sadly many a time I’ve attempted to debate and question what is posted i a waste

    • Hi Theo,

We at the Armenian Weekly sincerely apologize for the long delay in getting your comment published. It was a mistake, not because it was being censored. We have recently discovered our site has had an enormous backlog of comments—nearly one thousand— and are currently moderating them. We are an incredibly small staff, just two people, and we are going through the comments as swiftly as we can. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. We do, however, moderate according to certain ethical guidelines. Any comments containing profane language, hate speech, or racist diatribe will not be tolerated. Comments sections should exist to facilitate healthy dialogue, and we believe volleys of vulgar insults serve no one.

Point blank, we do not censor comments just because we disagree with the contents they contain. If your comment is not appearing, there are two possible reasons: 1) It violates our guidelines and contains aggressive or hateful language, or 2) we are in the process of moderation.

      Thank you for your readership,

      Karine Vann

  8. It doesn’t make sense that it’s “always been Turkish lands”. Everyone knows that is Greek and Armenian lands. The mongols arrived in the 1100-1200s and adopted customs/languages of the countries they rode through. I wish everyone living in turkey would take a blood test to see what they really are ethnically. Many of them look Greek and Armenian, because they are. My point is, it’s not logical to claim a land as your own (Turk) if you’re not even Indigenous to the area. If you’re all the way from China. Makes no sense. The contributions, the history, the languages, the architecture, the religion-all Greek, Armenian, Assyrian, Jewish, Kurdish. In other words, indigenous.
