Gerson Smoger

Gerson Smoger first became involved with the tragedy of the Armenian Genocide while working in Geneva with the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. He has maintained his interest in international human rights, now serving as Secretary of the Board of Physicians for Human Rights. Committed to social justice, he also serves on the boards of non-profits Public Citizen and Public Justice. He hopes that this play will help shed light on the often forgotten suffering of the Armenian people, as well as the horrors of genocides that have occurred all too frequently over the past century.

  1. I am glad this article has been published. Very interesting story. Question: Have additional details emerged through the interviews mentioned about Pastor Serian’s brief sojourn at Bitias (my paternal grandmother’s birthplace)and ultimate deportation with some segment of that Armenian village to the town of Hama? I am revising my doctoral dissertation for publication; I could add any new information to it: “The Armenian Villagers of Musa Dagh: A Historical-Ethnographic Study, 1840-1915” (Department of History, UCLA, 1996).

    • Dear Professor Shemmassian,

The URL for Pastor Serian’s autobiography is http://somepeoplehearthunder.com/images/Serian%20Book.pdf. We obtained a copy from the family and scanned it in. If your dissertation is available and something you would like linked to (before your book comes out), we would love to link to it on the SomePeopleHearThunder.com website. In order to respond to your more personal questions about individuals, please contact us on the more private forum of the site’s feedback page.

  3. I too am so glad that another way of reaching out to Americans most of whom know nothing of this Genocide/Holocaust. My mother would not let me be ignorant. Dhe reminded me every day that the Holocaust that killed scores of our Jewish relatives would never had happened had the world taken a stance against Turkey’s actions. And still today the US will not use the “G” word. Thank you my dear friend Gerson and your partner.
