by Harry Derderian

Mike Mirakian Jr.—a totally appropriate choice for Olympic king!

Active in the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF), a consistent AYF Olympic participant, and active after his AYF days—all criteria met in splendid fashion.

“I’m thrilled,” Mike said as he accepted congratulations from one and all at the Olympics, which also saw appropriate recognition for the Mirakian family, with father Mike senior being chosen a AYF Spirit award winner.

Adding to that, cousin Victoria Mesropian Yekpairian was chosen queen.

As the top scorer in New Jersey AYF Olympic history with 93 points, Mike excelled in the pool—backstroke and relay events—as well as on the track in the 1600-meter run and 4 by 400-meter relay events. Let’s also mention his participation in softball during the span of time that the “Arsen” chapter was tops routinely in this fun and exciting Saturday event.

In reflecting, Mike talked about his AYF and Olympic experiences.

“I always enjoyed competing and having our AYF members together. The camaraderie was great! There were many great Olympics, so it’s tough to choose one over the other as a favorite. Some of the athletic performances over the years stand out, but there were some truly great athletes that participated and I was thrilled to be part of it. The relationships are the most important memory,” he added.

After leaving AYF ranks, Mike has devoted his time to the youth and church.

He is the Sts. Vartanantz church representative for the Armenian churches sports association for the last 11 years and has been vice commissioner for the past four years. Aside from that, he has served on the steering committee for AYF Olympics three times (serving as chair on one occasion) and consistently participates in multiple activities/events in support of the church.

“As many would probably say, some of the best memories were from camp, where lifelong friendships are made and our culture is cultivated. Even today when I attend dances, I think about the days from camp and also have very fond memories of seminars and meetings,” Mike added.

Mike and wife Melissa have two daughters, Nicolette and Meline—both future Olympians with a great father to look up to.
