MIAMI, Fla.—The Armenian Heritage Cruise (AHC) is pleased to announce a new program where healthcare professionals can obtain 10 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits for attending lectures by world renowned authorities in health care who have made major contributions to improving education and increasing the standards of health care in Armenia.
Distinguished scholars will discuss their work in Armenia, which includes initiatives in health policy and management, osteoporosis awareness, delivery of eye and dental care. This presents a rare opportunity to gain new insights into these areas and obtain CME credits while enjoying the incomparable ambience and venue of AHC 2017.
Topics include:
- The latest information on nutritional, epidemiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of osteoporosis.
- Identifying tooth decay in children who don’t have access to dental care and understanding what measures can prevent and treat it.
- The visually impaired that are living in settings that do not lend themselves to identification, treatment, and prevention.
- Integrating knowledge of common public health problems that affect populations at large with preventative approaches to treating them.
The Medical Program Committee includes: Dr. John P. Bilezikian, chair; Dr. Raffy Hovanessian, honorary chair; and Maria Tavitian, Armenian Heritage Cruise ambassador.
Distinguished Faculty members will include:
Dr. John P. Bilezikian, the Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Professor of Medicine and Professor of Pharmacology at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University. He is Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine for International Education and Research and Chief of the Metabolic Bone Diseases Program at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Bilezikian received his undergraduate training at Harvard College and his medical training at the College of Physicians & Surgeons. Over the past decade, Dr. Bilezikian has initiated a program of skeletal health in Armenia that has featured standing-room only symposia on osteoporosis, leadership roundtables at which the First Lady has presided, and the placement of bone densitometers throughout the country. The acquisition of this technology has facilitated the evaluation of skeletal health which was previously a great challenge. He is also developing research programs in collaboration with colleagues in Armenia. Dr. Bilezikian will summarize these activities as well as provide an update on advances in the evaluation and management of osteoporosis.
Dr. Robert Bagramian, Professor of Dentistry and Dentistry Public Health at the University of Michigan. He received his DDS degree from Temple University in 1960, and his MPH and DPH degrees from the School of Public Health, University of Michigan. He served, until recently, with great distinction as Dean of the School of Public Health at the American University of Armenia. His research has focused in the areas of epidemiology as they relate to Quality of Life issues in oral health. Dr. Bagramian is a leader in many initiatives to improve the quality and delivery of dental health to Armenia. The program in which is a major national figure has not only delivered dental care to virtually all regions of Armenia but also educational programs that teach children and parents the fundamentals of good oral health.
Dr. Lawrence V. Najarian graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine in 1982. He is Senior Attending Surgeon, New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, New York University-Bellevue Medical Center, and President, Armenian American Health Professionals Organization (AAHPO). Under the inspired leadership of Dr. Najarian, AAHPO has implemented a myriad of programs and missions to improve not only eye care in Armenia but many other health challenges. Over two decades of continuous dedication to the health needs of Armenia, AAHPO has been there when it counts. Larry will discuss AAHPO’s many initiatives and successes over its two decade-long record of outstanding accomplishments in Armenia.
Dr. Varduhi Petrosyan, Dean of the School of Public Health, American University of Armenia. Dr. Petrosyan received her PhD from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Health Policy and Management. She has a distinguished record of research on public health issues in Armenia with particular emphasis upon the control of smoking and the containment of tuberculosis. She has also made major contribution to issues related to the delivery of primary medical care, diabetes care, environmental health, and determinants of health disparities among vulnerable populations. Along with her duties as Dean of the School of Public Health, Dr. Petrosyan continues to serve as Director of the Center for Health Services Research and Development. Dr. Petrosyan’s lectures will focus on public health issues in Armenia with attention to the major challenges of smoking and tuberculosis in the country and other important public health issues.
The Armenian Heritage Cruise 20th Anniversary cruise is scheduled to sail on Jan. 20-29, 2017, departing from Miami, Florida to Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, and Labadee.
