  1. Rather than save it from preditor developers, the Melkonian Institute in Cyprus was closed down by the “Armenian Benevolent Union” currently run by a group of businessmen. Melkonian Institute over many decades graduated great Armenian minds and nurtured their souls. The same AGBU group closed the doors of another Armenian school in the Los Angeles basin. In addition, young Armenians in their adopted countries seem to be under pressure to want “to belong” to other cultures by not speaking Armenian, and/or some parents encouraging the language of the adopted country, as a prerequisite for future success. There may be other equally important elements that have caused Western Armenian to be classifed by UNESCO as “endangered”. How to re-establish Melkonian Institute, fund other Armenian language/culture institutes, and re-instill pride in the young thus reversing the trend are major challenges to overcome
