Golf Tournament to Raise Funds for ‘Mer Doon’

On Fri., May 15, a golf tournament to support the “Mer Doon” (“Our Home”) NGO will be held in honor of Julia Ashekian, on the one-year anniversary of her passing.

Julia devoted much of her life to her church and to the Armenian people. The 1988 earthquake in Armenia left in its wake thousands of orphans. Julia, along with her husband Clement, established the Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP), which aided seven orphanages in Armenia and provided care for several thousand children.
Following the success of CASP, she co-founded “Mer Doon” in 2006, which aims to break the cycle of dependency for impoverished young women in Armenia by providing education, job training, and a family environment, instilling leadership skills, and teaching self-sufficiency. It has been recognized as one of the nation’s most successful not-for-profit organizations.
The golf tournament will be held at the Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, R.I., and will feature Armenian food and an auction. All proceeds will benefit “Mer Doon.”
