Meet the Director: Grandma’s Tattoos (Fair Lawn, N.J.)

A scene from 'Grandma's Tattoos'

DEC. 9, 2011 * MEET THE DIRECTOR: ‘GRANDMA’S TATTOOS’. Meet Director Suzanne Khardalian during New Jersey’s premier screening of “Grandma’s Tattoos,” a riveting new film that lifts the veil of thousands of forgotten women—survivors of the Armenian Genocide—who were forced into prostitution and tattooed to distinguish them from the locals. It is a ghost story—with the ghosts of the tattooed women haunting us—and a mystery film, where many taboos are broken. A Q&A with Khardalian will follow the screening. Khardalian, an independent filmmaker and writer, has directed more than 20 films, including “Back to Ararat” (1988). The event is free and open to the public, and is jointly sponsored by St. Leon Armenian Church, the Knights of Vartan, the Armenian National Committee of New Jersey, and the Tekeyan Cultural Association. A reception will follow the presentation. This film is not appropriate for children. Begins at 7:45 p.m. at St. Leon Armenian Church, Charles & Grace Pinajian Youth Center, 12-61 Saddle River Rd. in Fair Lawn, N.J. For more information, call (201) 791-2862.
